Mini Product Review & Haul-O-Day: ****Colourpop****

Price & Purchase Process & Packaging:

Colourpop is quickly making its way to the top of the cosmetics empire with the rapid release of products, in particular, eyeshadow palettes and their adjoining complementary items such as lippies, highlighters, and bronzers. For the last 3 months, Colourpop has been the eyeshadow product that I have purchased the most from. I have purchased all of Colourpop’s Fall & Holiday Palettes, via the website directly or from Sephora, and an additional 5 premade quad palettes, AND an additional 32 single shadows. The total would be 11 palettes, 5 quads, 32 single shadows, and some lippies. The cost of each palette and single shadow varies from week to week (and sometimes day to day) because of various flash sales, Black Friday sales, etc. I think you could say I have overdosed on Colourpop.

Pigmentation & Color Payoff & Performance:

There’s no doubt the Colourpop is knocking it out the part in terms of their products, eyeshadows specifically, but what’s even more impressive is their intense marketing approach and multi-dimensional sales approach. They have managed to take an irresistible, easily marketed product and created such demand that the product is affordable to the public. So, I definitely went a little HAM on the purchasing on the Colourpop website.

The Colourpop single shadows and palettes are indeed remarkable. With a perfectly affordable price point, an amazing shadow formulation, and a wide and most important CONSISTENT flow of product options, Colourpop is rocking the socks of the cosmetics industry. Every single shadow is smooth and velvety and are seamlessly pressed in a manner that produces high quality shadows. The color selection, variation, and finish is top notch and can easily be compared to other well known as respected single shadows, such as, Coloured Raine, Strobe Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Devinah Cosmetics. Remarkable shadows, excellent price, wide and varying color selection, and equally impressive selection of finishes.

Overall Product Presentation:

I wouldn’t continue to buy products from Colourpop if I didn’t think they were worth a damn. For those of you late to the party, catch up quickly. It’s a fantastic product, it’s an amazing price, and the selection is awesome. What the hell else do you need in life? If you are looking to invest in some single shadows, I would honestly start HERE!

Haul - O - Day & Full Product Review: ****Coloured Raine Mini Palettes****

Price & Purchase Process & Packaging:

have been actively participating in the BOMB challenge since early summer when it was brought to my attention. It is an opportunity to feature, highlight, patronize, and partner with Black Owned Makeup Brands, in particular, Indie companies. There are three that I continually invest time, energy and finances towards in terms of thorough research and product development. I am quite comfortable and confident in speaking about these companies: Juvia's Place, Beauty Bakerie, & the subject of this review, Coloured Raine.

Before Coloured Raine was even a YouTube sensation, I was studying diligently about makeup products, their composition, and what job each component had in order to make the shadow. I spent time on skin care and the effects of various chemicals on the eyelids and skin. Unfortunately, more often than not consumers are unaware, underinformed, and victims the well-oiled machine that is hypercommercialism (™) and maniconsumerism (™). We are a society that emphasizing capitalism, hypercommercialism, and manicconsumerism in a way that is appeal and almost necessary to our society, but more importantly our society stands tenuously and delicately on the mass production of products ranging from pet food, to underwear, to soap, and yes, to beauty and cosmetics. As I continued my research and digging, I came to have a deep appreciation for nonconglomerative, functioning companies, such as Indie companies, who interests was not solely based on profit, but rather on providing consumers quality products at a reasonable price with tangible, human interactive, shared, cooperative customer relations.

That’s when I discovered Coloured Raine. Before Nikkie Tutorials and before all the major YouTube knew about this brand, what their mission was or what their principles were, I had already successfully purchased from Coloured Raine twice – Once to procure the coveted Queen of Hearts Eyeshadow Palette and second, the obtain a very distinct selection of their single eyeshadows! I was over the moon about my purchases from the brand and even more stoked that I was supporting a black-owned makeup brand (indie).

When the opportunity came about to secure the Coloured Raine Mini Palettes, I jumped at the chance and purchased the entire bundle pre-sale, and distribution was set to release on October 20th (I think!). After the release date, I received my package within a few days unscathed and ready to test.  The bundle features four mini palettes, which I will admit are a little expensive for my taste. You have a Beauty Rust Mini Palette, with gorgeous sandy red colors. Next, there is the Berry Cute Mini Palette (which, incidentally is my favorite), which rocks some beautifully rich majesty purples and rosy pink colors. The cooler toned palette, The Lovelies Mini Palette, contains this wonderfully rich blue, that is deep and inviting. Lastly, is the Smoke Show Mini Palette, which is more of your classic smoky shades, perfect for an evening, or a sexy, alluring eye look. Each Mini comes in a decorative sleeve with its accompanying 6 pan palette. Both the names and the sleeve colors of the palettes coordinate, giving a great indication of the theme of the palette, so you don’t have to turn your drawers upside down trying to find the right one, which is uber convenient.

Pigmentation & Color Payoff & Performance:

Coloured Raine came to fame through numerous influencers including, bloggers, vloggers, YouTube Personalities, other Indie Brands, and other various Indie Brand supporters. When the Queen Of Hearts Palette launched, social media vacant personalities (™) or people that live their lives outside of the Cyberspace including, traditional consumers who purchased products from a brick & mortar establishment, consumers that receive product information via traditional television, or news outlets, did not that accessibility to the palette as opposed to many of us, in particular millennials, that are engrossed in the revolutionary hamster wheel known as social media. The companies best marketing strategy was attack a market group that was prime for accessibility and would create exposure and generate chatter among the many facets of the beauty community.

What made Queen of Hearts so cherished and revered in the beauty community was in part due to the masterfully crafted marketing strategy of the community, the popularity of Indie companies, specifically black owned makeup brands, and the undeniable excellence and quality of the product itself.

Fast forward to the launch of the “Minis”. Each palette is priced at $36 dollars (as of 11/20/17 they are discounted to $27 per mini each) and during pre-sale, consumers were able to purchase all 4 minis for a discounted price in a bundle package. Each palette represents a color concepts that accurately depicts the flow of current trends in the beauty community.

Beauty Rust is a warm-toned palette, similar to Colourpop’s Yes Please! Palette  & Natasha Denona’s Sunset Palette. The  palette’s color selection is a bit myopic, but yet the colors work wonderfully together and this mini would make a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration eye look which would sure to have you the talk of turkey town!! Berry Cute is a berry/pink toned palette that highlights both warm and cool tones in a diverse and unique color palette, similar to Colourpop’s She Palette & Elements of Surprise Palette as well as, Natasha Denona’s Lila Palette. As you know, I am a massive Natasha Denona Super Fan and I don’t think there’s anything that comes close to her variety, color selection and diversity in shadow texture and consistency, however, the color payoff gives the Lila Palette a run for their money and a fight for my heart!  Then you have the Lovelies palette that is most obviously a cool toned and perfect for the Autumn & Winter seasons. One must air on the side of caution when working with the darker shades in this palette, because they undoubtedly pack a punch, and let’s just say, you don’t want a black eye. Smoke Show rounds out the bunch with spectacular yet traditional colors that could smoked\ out any look or create a captivating smoky eye. You go never go wrong with a smoky eye done with precision and fine-tuned application skills. I like it when a brand comes out with a series of palettes and/or mini palette and includes something for the sophisticated person who can rock a smoked out lower lash like no other.

Overall Product Presentation:

I am a proud Afro-American, “Bougie” woman. I hold everything and everybody to the same standard of quality, ethics, self-discipline, and reflection that I practice. It is my duty and obligation to continue to encourage others to be the best version of who they are and to promote businesses that excel in industry standards and push the envelope of creative development, innovation, and progressive and forward-thinking productivity. As an active and engaging participant of the BOMB Challenge, I would say with confidence that Coloured Raine is a cut above the rest, breaking the chains or ordinary and undoing the restraints of complacent normalcy. I not only recommend them as a brand but urge you as a consumer to insist to place industries and brands to a higher level of authenticity and product quality. You can’t go wrong with Coloured Raine.

Mini Review & Haul - O - Day: ***Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes***

Price & Purchase Process & Packaging:

When the Huda Beauty Obsession Palettes launched, I initially said I was going to purchase them. Not because I didn’t like the color palette or because of questions of quality, but because I didn’t really need them. I have a motherload of palettes with similar color schemes, but when that Sephora VIB Rouge sale hit, and the cost per palette went from $27 → $21.60. Somehow, I could reconcile the slight price break in order to purchase all four of the palettes. Even though I ordered the palettes during the illustrious VIB sale, they still arrived undamaged with three days!

Pigmentation & Color Payoff & Performance:

The Obsessions Palette are curated in four uniquely diverse color schemed. The launch of the palettes saw the revelation of the Warm Brown Palette, the Mauve Palette, the Smokey Palette, and the Electric Palette. My two favorites and the most workable and wearable palettes for me are the Mauve Palette & the Electric Palette (I know, Electric Palette – workable & wearable!!) In my experience these palettes are not as pigmented and colorful as Huda’s larger palettes. They aren’t bad palette, but it’s something I would skip if you have similar palettes with the same shade selection, which…I bet you do. The price of the product is comparatively fair, but again, I don’t these palettes are super revolutionary. Just one reviewer opinion.

Overall Product Presentation:
So, to sum up my thoughts…Good but not great. Similar palettes exist, for example NYX’s latest square palettes in Brights & Warm are pretty much the same thing, and honestly they’re pretty much the same quality. No shade, just truth. This was my least favorite palette release from Huda, but I am sure she’ll make it up to us…..I know she’s got something cooking!

A Palette & A Partner Rotation: Week 34 **What Did WheelDecide Pick This Week?**

Well my faithful Wheel Decide picked out some beauties this week! Because my collection is so large, especially my eyeshadow collection, using Wheel Decide has been quite helpful. Sometimes it picks things that I really don't feel like trying to be creative with that week, but it truly pushes me to call on my creativity and my innovative nature. There are some things that I am working on panning for 2018, and you will get an update about those items at the end of the week. I think I picked too many things. Until next time, Stay Beautiful, Stay Brainy, and Stay a Bad Ass Bougie!

Bougie Brie's Monthly Bummers - November Edition

Bottom Five of the Month - NOVEMBER 👎👎
  • It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream: I think at one point I featured this product and it’s sister formula in a Bougie Brie’s Monthly Best in Beauty, but over time, my feelings have drastically changed. Part of being an excellent, not just average or mediocre, reviewer is thoroughness. It is difficult to compose a fully formed, objective, and critically informed idea without being conclusively thorough and what the hell does that mean? Consumers are relying on both my objectivity and adequate & sufficient research in order to form an opinion whether or not a purchase is appropriate for them. Is it an economically wise decision? Does the product work for my skin tone, texture, and sebum activity? Is the product person of color friendly, or pale person friendly? It is improbable & impossible to address all these areas of importance when a reviewer tests the product a couple of times, and then writes a half-ass, uninformed, damn near negligent review about a product. So, my observation of this product has changed over time because I have thoroughly tested it and it is not the right match for my skin, it creates additional sebum activity, and separates at the nose and chin. 2 thumbs down!

  • It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream Illumination:  So, exactly the same situation as above except this foundation is worse because of the illumination factor, which is just straight up, greasy bacon face. You can set your face until pigs fly, but I promise you that within the hour you’ll be an oil slick. There’s illumination and then there’s greasy. This product is not meant for combination/oily skin. Just trust me on this, ok?

  • Wet n Wild – I’m Getting Sunburned:  I am a big Wet n Wild fan. One of the most inexpensive quality products at the drug store. As with any product line, there are hits and misses and this product can miss me completely. Although limited, the color selection really stinks, and the crease color is entirely too dark and too pigmented. Not my favorite from this brand!

  • Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara: I received this product as part of a bundle with a purchase and I decided I would try it. Now, I am a die hard L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara lover but sometimes it’s a good thing to try out other items. One, you might discover something new you enjoy and find useful or two, you’ll go running back to your old faithful with tears and apologies. Guess what I did? Not the mascara for me.

  • Essence Kajal Pencil in 01 Black: You ever heard that old adage, you get what you pay for? Well, I paid $1.99 for this eyeliner and it’s just terrible. I just got it last week on the recommendation of a friend. I have been having trouble with my eyeliner running (side note, if you know a solution for this leave it in the comments). This eyeliner didn’t run but it evaporated into thin air – POOF! I love Essence’s Translucent Mattifying Powder, but this wasn’t worth the $1.99
